Tricky Math Problem of the Week (27 nov)

Solution to the 27 nov, 2006 problem ( Trains Meeting Second Time )

Trains Meeting Second Time

A train starts from the Station A at 2:30 PM towards Station B. Another train starts from B at 2:40 PM towards station A with double the speed of first train. They meet at a certain time and distance. After that they reach other stations and then they return for their originating station with the same speed and without any delay. They meet second time at certain point. What is the distance covered by the first train in between its first and second meeting with the second train, if the total distance between the stations is 300 km.

  • 200 KM
  • 400 KM
  • 300 KM
  • None of the above.
  • Cannot be determined.

    Answer :200 KM

    Solution (Fast Approach)

  • First time trains meet each other. Then they move to their destinations.
  • After meeting first time, together they will travel a distance equal to the distance between the stations A and B, when they reach opposite stations.
  • Now they return back to their originating stations.
  • They meet at a certain point between A and B. Still they will together cover total distance between A and B, when they meet second time.
  • Hence the total distance covered by the two trains between their first and second meeting is 2*Distance between A and B = 2*300 = 600 km.
  • As the speed of first train is half the other one, it will cover half the distance as covered by the faster train.
  • If the distance covered by the first train = X, then by faster train is 2X
  • X + 2X = 600
  • X = 200 KM
